"Enthusiasm is building, interest is gaining, new ideas are surfacing, fevor is spreading ... We're off and running!"
Those words were taken from the minutes of one of the Pineland Striders' first meetings in February 1978. It didn't take long for that spirit to give birth to the Independence Race(s) we know today. The first race was held in July 1978. For 34 years, the Independence Races have become a tradition  on the road race schedule for Southern New Jersey.

Just as consistent is the Pineland Striders commitment to our community. Over the years, our races have benefited an assortment of charities and causes. But in the past several years, we have supported the Precious Gems Memorial.  This organization is dedicated to preserving the memory of four local young women who lost their lives in a car accident because of a drunk driver. The vision of the Precious Gems Memorial Inc. is to save lives by protecting our communities from Drunk Drivers.

In 2012, we are reaffirming our commitment to our community and the Precious Gems, which will receive part of the proceeds from the race.

Our scenic 5K and 10K courses follow designated routes through the tree-lined roads in the Medford area. The routes, which are measured according to USATF specifications, include three water stops. Awards will be presented to the top three winners in each 5-year age category. And after the races, there are refreshments galore ... water, oranges, bagels, pretzels, and more.

If you haven't run with us before, come join us this year. And if you've been a past participant, you already know the fun that awaits you this year.
